The Story of Termon House & Charles Cobbe Beresford
19 April 2023 @ 20:00

On Wednesday 19th April, at 8pm, Termonmaguirc Historical Society is hosting a talk in the Patrician, on the unique story of Termon House and the life and times of the Rev. Charles Cobbe Beresford and his family. The event will recall many fascinating details of our local, national and international history with the Rev. Beresford as the central character. It will look at some of his forbearers and descendants and the intriguing lives they lived through wealth, power, titles, religious service and inter-marrying among family members and other wealthy aristocracy. Through memories, stories, images and archive research those in attendance will gain an insight into a very important area of the parish that is surprisingly little-known to most people. The stories range from a famous ghost story to the designer of O’Connell Street in Dublin, from the inventor of the world’s first aquarium to ‘painting the town red’, from a ‘nun on the run’ to the sale of St Colmcille’s Bell, from the Three Musketeers to ‘Earl of Tyrone’, and the long years spent by the Rev. Beresford as hard-working rector in Termonmaguirke. Research for this piece primarily focuses on the life of Charles and Termon House from his birth in 1770 to his death in 1850.
The society is very fortunate to have recently acquired the Rev. Beresford’s personal copy of The Book of Common Prayer, printed in 1638, and this will be on display on the night. All are welcome to come along to this event.
